How to Book New Photography Clients With Booking Marathons

Having a slow week in your photography business? You may be feeling like you’re in panic mode. You know you need to make money, which means you need to get clients in the studio, but how can you do that on such short notice? Ahhh!

I get it — I’ve definitely been in that position before. But I also have learned over the years one amazing trick that can help you book clients in a snap. One that doesn’t require you to spend a lot of money on Facebook ads OR run a flash sale to do. 

What’s this strategy I recommend to book new photography clients? Booking marathons! Find out what they are and how you can use them to your advantage here!

But First…How Booking Marathons Work

Now you may be wondering what a marathon session even is. Basically, it’s just a fun way to book a handful (or more) of clients at one time. And though the name might imply it, these aren’t mini-sessions. 

They’re full sessions, and work like any other sessions you offer in your business. They just have an added incentive to book so you can book more clients quickly. 

As a boudoir photographer, this could look like: 

  • Limited holiday themes (like Valentine’s Day or Chrsitmas)
  • Outdoor boudoir sessions
  • Beach sessions
  • Seasonal sessions (like fall or winter)

I also recommend offering special pricing or print credit to give them even more of an incentive to book!

If your pricing is based on your sales average goals, then don’t worry about the print credit or slightly “discounted pricing.” You’ll make it up during your sales sessions, especially if you do in-person sales.

So yes, the focus is on getting clients through the door, but you also want to make sure it’s profitable for your time, too. 

Now, let’s talk about how you can use a marathon to book photography clients quickly!

Step #1: Choose a Theme

The first step in my three-step photography marathon strategy is to choose a theme. I mentioned these above, but I’m mentioning them again because they’re a GREAT incentive for people to sign up! Who doesn’t love a good theme?

Whoever your ideal client is, think about an opportunity they’d want to take advantage of. Valentine’s Day tends to be a popular theme for boudoir photographers, but you could also do something seasonal, or even get creative with it!

Whatever your ideal client would love, tap into those ideas!

Step #2: Scheduling Sessions for New Clients

Remember that these marathons are full sessions, so keep your capacity in mind so you don’t overbook yourself. Along with your capacity, you’ll need to consider…

  • The time it takes hair, make-up, session time, and the reveal. Those all have a significant impact on your photography schedule!
  • The time of day you can accommodate clients. Because a lot of it will depend on natural light. Especially if you’re someone, like me, who LOVES working in full sun. 

Don’t think you have to do a lot of sessions in one day, especially if you’re working another job on top of being a photographer. Some people like working that way, and some don’t. There’s no right or wrong answer, but be honest with yourself and what you know you can handle. 

Step #3: Don’t Forget About Marketing

The third step is to plan your marketing strategy! This will definitely depend on your business, but a basic strategy for these marathons is to utilize what you have!

Announce it with an email, then keep hyping them up with a few more. If you’re on social media, then make sure you post it to whatever platform you’re using. You could even make it a party and go live with this “special announcement!”

You could also try hitting up your past clients and let them know about these sessions! I’ve found that most of the time, people are more than happy to consider another session. There’s no harm in trying!
