Have you had inquiries that seem to disappear, leaving you wondering what you did wrong? I get it. There’s nothing more frustrating than thinking you had a client ready to book, only to have them ghost you. Today, I want to explain what you should do when you realize you’ve lost photography leads and how you can potentially book them anyway.

The Art of Follow-Up

The Right Way to Follow Up After Being Ghosted

One of the most effective strategies to recapture lost photography leads is to follow up one to two times, maximum. A photographer once told me an educator advised her to follow up seven or even ten times. I’m going to ask you not to be that photographer. Excessive follow-up can come across as desperate and annoying. If a business followed up with me that many times, I would block them.

An appropriate amount of follow-up is one to two times. Sometimes, people get busy, read your message, and forget to respond. Here’s a template for a polite follow-up:

Hi [Name],
I hope you had a great weekend. It’s been a few days since we last spoke, and I just wanted to touch base. Do you have any questions about the information I sent over? Would you like to set up a call to chat more if you’re interested? I also have a free guide on prepping for your session, which includes a coupon for booking. Here’s the link [Insert Link]. I’m here to answer any questions you might have and hope to hear from you soon.

Accepting the Outcome

As photographers and business owners, we must accept that we are not the right fit for every client. Not everyone will book a session just because they reached out. Sometimes, it’s not the right time for them, or you might be more expensive than anticipated. That’s okay. Sometimes, personal life events might make them wait. They may come back when the time is right.

Building Your Email List

Create a Lead Magnet

One of the most important things you can do to recapture lost leads is to get them on your email list. There are two main ways to do this effectively:

  • Offer a Lead Magnet: Create a valuable free resource that you can offer in your initial inquiry email. This incentive encourages potential clients on the fence about booking to take the next step.
  • Direct Invitation: Ask if they would like to join your email list. Let them know that you occasionally run sales and that being on your list will ensure they are the first to know about them.

  • Outfit Preparation: Advice on what to wear and how to prepare.

By providing this guide, we help potential clients feel more comfortable and informed, making them more likely to book with us.

Once you have these leads on your email list, the next step is to keep them engaged. Sending regular, valuable content will keep your business at the top of their mind. Here are a few strategies:
