Marketing — it’s one of those things that make every photographer’s head spin around!

There’s so much to consider, so much to plan, and so much attention to give to make sure it all works. If we’re being honest, it’s a little too much, right?

Well…not exactly. At least, it doesn’t have to be!

Because the truth is, while marketing can feel a little out of our zone of genius as boudoir photographers, keeping it simple will make sure you always have a grasp on things!

So in this episode of the show, we’re going to be looking at a few must-have marketing foundations for photographers. And we’ll cover how you can implement them into your own business ASAP.

No more confusion, my friend. Let’s get to it!

The importance of having a foundation

If you don’t have a solid foundation for your marketing, then you’re basically just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. You’re left hoping things work, instead of creating a plan to make sure they do.

Life can still happen, but having a solid foundation means you’re prepared when it does. Things won’t always pan out the way you want them to, but with marketing, you NEED to have direction for it to work!

So let’s look at what you can iron out to create that plan!

I talk about this all the time, but it’s only because it’s seriously one of THE MOST important things you can do for your business. If you don’t know who you’re talking to specifically, you end up talking to everyone. And not everyone is going to book with you.

But knowing your ideal client, and learning how you can market to them, specifically, means you clear the pathway to get to them. You’ll have a much easier time finding people who want to book with you.

It’s 2024. We all know that having some sort of online presence is important! But for boudoir photographers, it’s especially important that you have a good website, not just a portfolio or a social media profile.

And I’m not just talking about one that’s aesthetically pleasing. It should also be easy to navigate. So much so that your potential clients come onto your site and know exactly how to follow the path to book with you.

THAT’S what makes a website high-converting, not all the bells and whistles.

Now, there are several types of traffic. And it’s possible that you get a little bit of each one. But to get the “most bang for your buck” so to speak, you have to figure out which one is doing the best for YOU.

Traffic drivers include things like:

  • Email marketing: With an ROI of $38 for every $1 spent, email marketing is a great investment.
  • SEO + blogging: Clients who come from Google are the ones who do their research and know what their investment will be. It’s a great way to get the right clients in the door!
  • Social media: It’s great for visibility and reaching a cold audience.
  • Referrals: These are usually where the best clients come in. Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth referrals!
  • Events: To book clients immediately, and get a significant boost to your email list, invest in events such as bridal fairs, networking events, and even hosting events in your own studio.

You don’t have to focus on them all, just the sources that perform well for your business. I suggest you start out by focuising on one to two of them. And once you’ve got those nailed down, you can start focusing on nurturing your other sources of traffic, too.

How to Put Your Foundations Into Place

Now that you know WHAT to do, you’re probably wondering… “How can I get started ASAP??”

It’s not as hard as it may seem! Marketing tends to be one of those things that feel really overwhelming when you first start. But keeping it simple, and taking it one step at a time, can help.

I like to tell my coaching clients inside of Forever Booked Out to follow this guideline:

  • Step 1: Focus on your ideal client + messaging (1 day)
  • Step 2: Focus on branding (1 day)
  • Step 3: Focus on your website, whether that’s a revamp or new implementation (2 – 7 days)
  • Step 4: Focus on SEO + creating your Google Business Profile (2 days)
  • Step 5: Brainstorm “fast cash strategies” [EXPLAIN WHAT THIS IS] (7 days)
  • Step 6: Brainstorm long-term strategies (12 days)

This is a pretty fast turnaround time, but as you can see, it’s simple

Maybe you need more time to do each step. That’s okay too. Just make sure you aren’t skipping any of these because they each have a REALLY important role to play in your marketing strategy!

Then, once these things are implemented, it’s really just maintenance from there!
