Handling sales objections in photography can be emotionally challenging. You’ve spent hours capturing and perfecting beautiful photos, only to have the client question the value of your work. This reaction is natural, but it’s important not to let it interfere with your sales process. Client objections are opportunities to clarify, educate, and guide them toward making a decision they feel good about. Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the business for years, handling client objections effectively is essential for your success.
Handling Sales Objections in Photography Businesses
There are two main objections photographers face during in-person sales (IPS) sessions: “It’s too expensive” and “I don’t like them.” Let’s explore strategies for addressing these concerns.
Objection: “Your Prices Are Too High”
As a boudoir photographer, this is the most common objection you’ll encounter. Remember, your primary job is to create beautiful photos and offer high-quality products. Here’s how to handle this objection:
- Stay Confident: It’s not your business how your clients choose to spend their money. If they want to invest in your work, let them. Avoid making them feel guilty about their financial constraints.
- Maintain Consistency: Make every client feel valued regardless of how much they spend. Whether a client spends $500 or $5,000, your attitude and service should remain the same.
- Educate Your Clients: Many clients don’t understand that your prices include the cost of the artwork (the shoot and the post production), not just the physical prints. Make it clear that they’re paying for the entire experience and the quality of your work.
- Offer Payment Plans: If a client experiences sticker shock, remind them about payment plan options. This can help them get everything they love while paying over time.
Objection: “I Don’t Like My Photos”
This emotionally charged objection often stems from the client’s self-consciousness rather than the quality of your work. Here’s how to navigate this sensitive terrain:
- Separate the Photos: If a client dislikes certain photos, move them into a separate folder so they don’t have to see them again. This helps shift their focus to the photos they do love.
- Encourage a Positive Perspective: Reassure clients that it’s normal to feel self-conscious. Encourage them to take a deep breath and look at every photo with an open mind.
- Highlight Positive Aspects: Point out the beautiful lighting, flattering angles, and genuine expressions in the photos. Help them see beyond their self-perceived flaws.
- Offer Minor Adjustments: If a client has specific concerns, discuss possible minor adjustments during retouching. Be careful not to overpromise, as the goal is to enhance their natural beauty, not alter it significantly.
- Involve Loved Ones: Sometimes, having a loved one present during the session can help the client see themselves in a kinder light.
Let me share a story about a client who perfectly illustrates these challenges. She came in for a boudoir session, felt beautiful during the shoot, but during the viewing session, she expressed dissatisfaction with her makeup in the photos. Despite our reassurances, she struggled with her concerns. However, she still loved many of the photos and ended up choosing 50 images.
To address her price concerns, we narrowed down to 30 images and discussed a payment plan. This process took more time than usual, but by being patient and understanding, we reached a solution that satisfied both of us. This experience underscores the importance of clear communication, transparency, and a client-centered approach in resolving objections during IPS sessions.
Building Confidence in Handling Sales Objections in Photography
Handling objections well comes with practice. You might not get it right the first or even the second time, but you will improve. Remember to stay calm, confident, and clear in your communication. This ensures your clients feel informed and valued throughout the process.
Overcoming objections in your boudoir photography sales session is essential for your success. By understanding and addressing your clients’ concerns with empathy and practical solutions, you can build stronger relationships and achieve successful sales.
