This Boudoir Photographer Booked 17 Sessions in One Weekend With the Help of 6-Figures Simplified

This episode of the Sustainable Freedom With Boudoir Photography Podcast is going to be very different — but very exciting! 

If you’re new here, I have a group coaching program called 6-Figures Simplified, where we talk and learn about ALL things boudoir business. 

And today, I have one of my students, Carly, joining me to talk about her experience inside the program!

Carly is a boudoir photographer from Maryland with about 10 years of experience. She started in weddings, but like many in the boudoir industry felt burnt out, and eventually, made the switch to boudoir. 

Through her time in 6FS, she’s been able to grow her biz, create something sustainable, and even go so far as to book 17 sessions in just one weekend!

How Carly Got Her Start as a Photographer

Like I said before, Carly was a wedding photographer before breaking into the boudoir industry. But that way oversimplifies her journey, so I’ll let you hear how she got her start, in her own words. 

“I actually did my first session when I was in high school. A friend asked if I’d take her senior portraits. This was in 2010/2011ish. I had been playing around with a camera for a little while at that point, so I said yes. 

I’d never thought of photographing people, but she asked. And I remember her asking, ‘Well, what do I owe you?’ And I was like, oh, it’s fine I’m just doing this for fun. But after, I started thinking about how if she paid me, then somebody else probably will, too.  

Fast forward to 2014, I did my first wedding. Then I formed my LLC in 2018. Eventually, I quit my corporate job in June of 2020 to go full-time. I booked like 30 weddings in about 45 days. And that was what gave me permission to be like, okay, I’ve now replaced my income I think I can actually make this happen.”

Why Boudoir Photography? 

As for getting started with the boudoir part…

“I did my first boudoir session in 2019 actually. I just had someone reach out to me and ask — I wasn’t even offering it, but I did it. I hadn’t even worked with this client before, not even for a wedding. 

After, she referred a friend. So in a matter of like two months, I did two sessions. And it literally just snowballed from there. I think it’s because of the nature of the session, it naturally encourages people to refer friends. It’s an experience they want to talk about. Since 2019, I’ve probably done over 100 sessions. 

I don’t know if I’ll ever completely be able to let go of weddings because there is

something I still love about them. But I’d love to just do a handful each year. It’s easy to get burnt out on weddings, there’s a lot that goes into them!”

Getting Business Support as You Grow 

But growing a boudoir photography business isn’t easy — especially when you start dipping your toes in a new niche. Eventually, we all need help!

“I  started getting myself into the position of trying to do more at a lower price point, and then I was really starting to get burnt out. This was late last year. And it made me realize this wasn’t a sustainable business for me. 

I was actually listening to your podcast when it just clicked for me that I was already in that industry, but I didn’t have a system. And I knew I needed one. 

Getting into 6-Figures Simplified helped a lot. It’s shown me a lot about having freedom with your business. I’ve had tons of support along the way, too.”

What About Pricing?

When it comes to pricing, Carly says, 

“At first, clients had two options to book — just the session, plus hair and makeup, and the digitals, OR all of that plus an album. They could book for about $750, or they

could do the one with the album for $1,100. 

I was sometimes giving 80 to 100 digitals that I was spending hours fully retouching. And I offered mini-sessions, too! I charged like $350 for these, and $150 of that went to hair and makeup. 

I did not feel good about it because I was not making money. I also feel like I wasn’t delivering my best work either, because I was so burnt out. 

With the help of being in 6FS though, I actually built out a pricing guide where I could see where everything was going. And I had to remind myself too that clients aren’t just paying for a piece of paper. It’s artwork, and it has to be priced accordingly. 

I loved having the guidance in 6FS to help me do this, plus really enjoyed the Facebook group element because I could post when I had a win. I feel much more confident with my pricing now!

And I appreciate that you give us a lot of stuff like email and pricing templates. As someone who likes the big picture, these resources help you do that.”

Carly’s Experience in 6-Figures Simplified

Now, let’s get to the nitty gritty of Carly’s experience with 6-Figures Simplified — more specifically, what made her take the leap of faith to join. 

“Hearing your podcast was definitely a catalyst because one, it opened my

eyes to like, oh, this is something I could do. And then from there, trying to think of what the next step was. 

I messaged you on Instagram. And you responded like right away, and were helpful in those messages. So I said why not! And I’ve loved being in 6-Figures Simplified. 

All the resources you get in 6FS — swipe files and templates — are huge for me. And then having the group element, where you’re actually super active in, is nice. I feel like that doesn’t happen much. There’s actual human-to-human support happening. 

Sometimes I have just random questions that I need help figuring out, and it’s nice to have that support. It’s really helpful for me because I’m a woman of questions.

There’s a lot of doubt and a lot of nerves with growth, and doing something like 6FS to help that growth, but you have to keep stepping out and doing it even if it’s uncomfortable. 

Which I’m glad I did because I ended up booking 17 sessions in one weekend!”
