How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile as a Photographer

Are you a boudoir photographer looking to boost your bookings and bring in a steady stream of clients? I’ve got a secret to share with you about how I have done it over the last 10+ years in this industry…

My Google Business profile brings in the majority of my clients (aside from referrals). 

Yep — that means search engine optimization (SEO) is putting in the work and helping my website rank higher on Google. That way, when a potential client looks up “boudoir photographers St. Louis,” I’m near the top of their results. 

SEO is pretty important for finding and booking clients! But before SEO can do its job, you need to set up your Google Business Profile as a photographer so people know you exist! 

And that’s why today, I want to show you how to do this. Let’s dive in!

How to Create Your Google Business Profile

The first step is the easiest and also exactly what you would expect — you need to set up your Google Business profile. You’ll also need to make sure it’s verified, but we’ll get to that in a second. 

Google has a complete step-by-step rundown you can access here, but if you want the Cliff Notes version…

  1. Create a Google Account for your business if you don’t already have one.
  2. Select your business category (for mine, I have Photographer, for example).
  3. Enter those important details, like address, your website, if it’s a location people can visit, etc. 
  4. Select the geographic areas you serve. 
  5. Verify your listing (Google will walk you through how to do this).

Overall, it’s pretty simple, but you can catch some of Google’s best practices here too. 

What if You Work Out of Your Home?

As a photographer, you’re going to need to photograph in a physical location. That’s a no-brainer. But if you don’t have a studio yet or you’re working out of your home, listing your location can be tricky. 

You probably don’t want to hand out your personal information. Totally get that! However, having a geographic location is important because when people are searching for boudoir photographers in your area, Google needs to know to pull you up in the search results

So I recommend this workaround: Use their home address but hide it on Google after you verify your location.

Sometimes the verification process just means being mailed a card to the address you provided. Sometimes you have to submit a video. I don’t think you have control over the way they ask you to verify the location, unfortunately. 

But, you can thankfully hide the location after the verification process!

What if You Don’t Want to List Your Phone Number?

As a small business owner, you likely don’t have a work phone and a personal one. And I totally understand not wanting to add your personal phone number on the internet. I don’t have mine listed, either. 

To work around that, you can get a Google Voice number for about $10 a month! It’s a great option if you want to keep your privacy but help boost your biz in the search results!

This can also be great for boosting local Google search results if you don’t have a local phone number. I don’t have a St. Louis phone number, so this is what I use. That way, my number looks local and still helps my SEO. 

Optimizing Your Google Business Profile

Having a good profile isn’t always about adding that local information! You also need to make sure you’ve got enough information about your business too. 

Provide as many details as you can, and don’t forget to add pictures! This could be “candid” pictures of you working, headshots, photos of your studio space, or portfolio pictures. This can really help potential clients get a feel for what you offer and the experience they could have in your studio.

Don’t be Shy — Request Reviews!

Reviews are another critical part of your Google Business Profile. Social proof is important these days, and having glowing reviews can really help funnel those leads (your ideal clients) in. 

So don’t be shy — ask people for reviews! Whether you reach out to past clients via email, or you create a follow-up communication process for clients in the future, those reviews can improve your credibility big time. 

Don’t Leave Your Marketing Up to Chance

Having a strong Google Business Profile as a photographer is important. But once you set it up, the work isn’t done. At least, not with your marketing as a whole.

If you want to funnel in the right leads, grab the attention of clients you’ll love working with, and ultimately, book out that schedule, you need to be looking at your marketing from a holistic view, too. It’s about so much more than just SEO!
